The CE mark is one of the most misunderstood symbols in cross-border trade. It is the manufacturer’s own declaration that a product meets the applicable EU rules — for example for toys, electronics, machinery or personal protective equipment.

What CE actually means

  • It is a self-declaration by the manufacturer, not a quality award and not a certificate issued by an EU authority.
  • For some product groups a notified body must be involved; for many, the manufacturer assesses conformity itself.
  • It must be backed by an EU Declaration of Conformity and a technical file.

Common misconceptions

CE is not the same as a Chinese export mark that looks similar. It does not apply to every product — only categories covered by specific directives. And products without a CE requirement are not unregulated: the GPSR still sets general safety obligations.

What you need to hold

If your product needs CE, you must be able to produce the Declaration of Conformity, the relevant standards, and the test or assessment evidence. Oyae helps you assemble these fields from your existing files and flags any gaps before a platform or buyer asks.
